At the start of the tuition period, the learner will take a level placement test in the form of a multiple-choice questionnaire. It contains 50 questions and its results show the learner’s command of Russian language structures, grammar, and vocabulary. The test content increases in difficulty from Beginner to Advanced levels. This grammar test is followed by an oral test during which the learner will answer the teacher’s questions.
Other forms of assessment are foreseen for the Superior and Expert levels: an oral assessment in the form of a spontaneous discussion or the expression of a point of view on the subject given by the teacher (also without preparation). In addition, the learner may be given an additional written test. This test involves writing a message, an article, a letter, a text, etc. and assesses the learner's ability to communicate a message clearly, to describe, narrate, explain, or justify a choice or a position, to compare two points of view, to express and argue his/her opinion, and to use vocabulary and structures adapted to the requested task.
If the learner has never studied the Russian language, he/she will not be asked to take a placement test.
